A scarce commemorative mug produced by Wood & Sons, Burslem, for the planned coronation of King Edward VIII on May 12th, 1937.
This striking mug was designed by Dame Laura Knight RA, one of Britain’s most celebrated artists of the early 20th century. The bold and colourful design shows Edward VIII’s portrait flanked by heraldic symbols including the lion, unicorn, elephant and St George slaying the dragon. Beneath the portrait are the words Coronation King Edward VIII. The base is stamped Woods Ivory Ware, England with Laura Knight’s signature.
Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before the coronation could take place, making all such commemoratives both rare and historically significant. The Laura Knight design is particularly desirable due to its artistic merit and vibrant, modernist style.
Condition: Displays beautifully, with strong colours. Small rim chip to base edge and minor glaze wear consistent with age (see photos). No cracks or repairs.
