This is a very fine example of a Chinese, hand carved, wood Group of Budai and five infants.

Please note: the first image maybe an enhanced presentation image. For an accurate representation of condition, including any wear or age-related marks, please refer to the additional photographs provided.
The patina on this piece points to its approximate age, we believe it to be over 80 years old possible a lot older.

The carving is very fine and intricate you just need to look at Budai's toe nails to get what I'm saying.

The wood is Walnut in appearance, a rich honey colour polished through many years of cherishing this very tactile piece.

Budai has origins cantered around cult worship and local legend. He is traditionally depicted as a fat, bald monk wearing a simple robe as in this piece.

He carries his few possessions in a cloth sack, being poor but content. He would excitingly entertain the adoring children that followed him and was known for patting his large belly happily. His figure appears throughout Chinese culture as a representation of both contentment and abundance. Budai attracted the townspeople around him as he was able to predict people's fortunes and even weather patterns.
