Here we have a Chinese root wood carving of an elder raised on a later oval ebony base, overall 23.5cm high

This is a marriage of perhaps an unstable carving to an ebony base to make a more practical piece.
It is very difficult to age pieces like this but our gut says early 20th century but maybe older
It is is in great condition and beautifully carved from a tree burr or root - the finely carved face makes this elder seem that more distinguished and wise some how - his eyes may be glass too
