A genuine Edwardian sterling silver belt buckle, dating to 1911, featuring circular abalone shell panels set within an intricately pierced openwork frame.

The design is distinctly Edwardian in character, combining flowing scrollwork with a strong geometric structure. Each half centres on a domed abalone roundel divided by a cross-banded silver motif, a popular decorative feature of the period. The silver has a softly aged finish that contrasts well with the natural iridescence of the shell.

Both halves are fully hallmarked for Birmingham, 1911, with the lion passant confirming sterling silver. The maker’s mark H W Ld is correctly attributed to Henry Williamson Ltd, a known Birmingham silversmith active in the early 20th century. Matching pattern numbers are present on each section, confirming they are an original pair.

The reverse shows the original belt fittings intact, with a firm, functional closure. The slight curvature to each plate is intentional and allows the buckle to sit comfortably when worn, rather than lying flat and rigid.

This is not a lightweight decorative piece but a well-made, solid buckle, suitable for:

reuse as a sash buckle or statement fastening
