A Large Glazed Terracotta Blackware Sculpture of a Mother Figure Feeding Her Baby, in the manner of Manuel Felguerez , 39 cm's Tall
Here we have a large glazed Terracotta blackware sculpture of a mother figure feeding her baby, in the manner of Manuel Felguerez , 39 cm's tall - weighs 4.3kg
The piece has all the signature characteristics of a Manuel Felguerez sculpture- the eyes are so typical of his work as is the abstract decoration and colouring - but we cannot find a signature - he didn't always sign his work
He received his primary, secondary and high school education through the Marists and was a Boy Scout from age eight to age twenty-three with his best friend Jorge Ibargengoitia. The Scouts encouraged him to read authors including Dostoyevsky and G. K. Chesterton and he took hiking trips including one to Iztacchuatl.
Scouting gave him the opportunity to travel to Europe in 1947 just after the end of World War II when the cultural scene was recovering. His intention was to go with Ibarguengoitia for a jamboree, but the trip cost 5,000 pesos which he could not pay. The two found a way for a cheaper passage and got to France on their own, angering the Mexican Scout leadership, who expelled them. They then decided to hitchhike around various countries including Italy, Switzerland, France, and England, staying at houses of Scouting contacts and visiting museums.
So he was in Europe and especially England mid last century so his work was available for purchasing then and maybe a Sussex collector bought a piece from him.
A pioneer in abstract art in Mexico, he studied in France and his formation and imagery is closely tied to geometric constructivism and abstract expressionism. His exhibitions number in the hundreds; among them, the Biennials in Paris, Sao Paulo and Tokyo. Covered with incised patterns, this piece is beautifully executed
Manuel Felgurez Barra (December 12, 1928 June 8, 2020) was a Mexican abstract artist, part of the Generacin de la Ruptura that broke with the muralist movement of Diego Rivera and others in the mid 20th century
You will have to make up your mind if this is by the artist but we think it may be but have described it as 'in the manner of' as we are not 100% , we have priced it low in the prices achieved for his sculpture work in the past, she has a couple of small chips seen from the images (one on her hand) and a few scratches possibly caused during fabrication but we cannot find any other issues
