Bacchus was the god of wine and revelry in Roman mythology. Considered the most versatile and elusive of the gods, with a Greek equivalent in Dionysus, Bacchus is frequently associated with the Roman god of wine Liber Pater. He brought joy wherever he went, but if crossed, he could be a vengeful god, driving one into madness.
The Palissy style refers to a genre of ceramics, which are produced in the manner of the renowned French potter Bernard Palissy (c. 1510-90). Typically, Palissys lead glazed earthenware was decorated with realistic three-dimensional casts of plants and animals, which were then painted in rich earthy tones.
The flask is encrusted with frogs, lizards, shells and foliage as well as the Bacchus type image
