This Late Victorian teapot by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Ltd is a real survivor. It has elegant proportions and is handsomely decorated in neoclassical style.
The body harks back to the late 18th Century when English factories copied silver in porcelain. Silversmiths calls it a commode shape. Printed symmetrical motifs are classically inspired palmettes, swirling acanthus, crossed laurel leaves, a chain of oak leaves and acorns as well as swags of roses.
The dramatic slender spout is made up of tapering curved flutes, gilded in between. The spout does have some chips to it
The base bears the stamp used by Wedgwood from 1878 to 1891.
Condition is pretty good -there is some gilt rubbing and the chip to the spout - the lid and rims are in great condition -there is some ware cracking to the base as seen in the images and discolouring from the tannin
