An antique pottery vase with Giovanni Carlo Valentino Manzoni mark to base 1897
Here we have an antique pottery vase with Giovanni Carlo Valentino Manzoni mark to base 1897
Giovanni Carlo Valentino Manzoni was born in 1855. He studied in Turin from the age of 20 to 29 training as a sculptor.
Following this training period he travelled for a short time in Europe and the United States, finally settling in London in 1885. He lived, and started a family, in the King's Road area of Chelsea, and was a neighbour of Conrad Dressler, co-founder of Della Robbia.
Carlo Manzoni originally worked at the Della Robbia factory before branching out on his own and starting up the Minerva Artware pottery where he worked for a couple of years before re-joining Della Robbia. This vase was, I believe, produced at the Minerva pottery.
The piece is in fantastic all round condition with no chips or cracks and the only flaw I can find is the tiniest of nicks/fleabites on the rim so small my camera is not picking it up. To find it you will need to angle it towards the light and look closely. In fact, most people would never notice it was there but is best mentioned for accuracy. Any white marks or streaks you can see are just light reflections.
The vase has the Carlo Manzoni mark on the base which can be seen in one of the photographs above. The base is dated 1897 with the no 64 between a 9 and a 7 and I assume the number 64 is the shape of the vase or pattern number.
Carlo Manzoni Granville, Della Robbia Connection 1897 - this vase has no chips and in great condition
