Here we have an ink and watercolour observational drawing of a Malay Tribe member in ceremonial dress 25cm sq.
Unsigned art can be frustrating as we are not able to put a name/face to the work but on the other hand there is always an air of mystery about these works- is it or isn't it!
This looks to be by an artist that has travelled and is making a detailed observation of a tribal member from the Maylay penninsular.
The Malay Peninsula is a peninsula in Mainland Southeast Asia. The landmass runs approximately northsouth, and at its terminus, it is the southernmost point of the Asian continental mainland. The area contains Peninsular Malaysia, Southern Thailand, and the southernmost tip of Myanmar (Kawthaung).
The island country of Singapore also has historical and cultural ties with the region.
The indigenous people of the peninsula are Orang Asli and Malays, an Austronesian people - so perhaps this is a an observation of one of these indigenous people at this time.
This drawing has been produced on card supplied by Johnson and Hoffman 31 Devonshire St London - they were active 1882-1950's as a Photographers
There are some marks on the mount and corner damage as you can see
These sketches are from a portfolio collection bought at local Sussex auction - trimmed mounted and framed they would make stylish and original images for your home or office
