Here we have an original Thackray Charnley bone saw 50cm owned by Dr Paris Edwards who carried out first hip replacement

Paul Thackray (1939-2023) was the founder of the Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds, United Kingdom. His passion for medical history played a crucial role in shaping the museums extensive collection of medical supplies. From medical chainsaws to 15th-century ear scoops, Thackray donated thousands of items to the museum. Notably, he also contributed an impressive array of 10,000 stamps to the British Museum1.
Thackrays legacy includes his involvement in the design of instruments for the earliest modern hip replacement. The Charles F. Thackray Medical Supplies Company, founded by his grandfather in 1902, played a pivotal role in this collaboration. Today, hip replacements are one of the most common surgical procedures in the UK, and the components are still designed at Thackrays old factory in Beeston

Sir John Charnley, CBE, FRS (29 August 1911 5 August 1982) was an English orthopaedic surgeon. He pioneered the hip replacement operation, which is now one of the most common operations both in the UK and elsewhere in the world, and created the "Wrightington centre for hip surgery". He also demonstrated the fundamental importance of bony compression in operations to arthrodese (fuse) joints, in particular the knee, ankle and shoulder.

This was bought as part of a collection of items from Dr Edwards son in Sussex - it is in a sealed bag and never been used!
