An unsigned rapid sketch of a female nude 28x38cm
Here we have an unsigned rapid sketch of a female nude 28x38cm
This looks to be by an accomplished artist - there is freedom in the hand of this artist that only comes with years of practice and/or undiluted talent
There are a couple of marks on the paper but these were likely made by the artist during the sitting - top left and bottom right corner has a crease -this could be trimmed out with no loss to the composition
Unsigned art can be frustrating as we are not able to put a name/face to the work but on the other hand there is always an air of mystery about these works- is it or isn't it!
There is an ink stamp for William Greengrass studios on the reverse - William Greengrass was born in 1892, the son of a school teacher in Hertfordshire. William left school in 1908 and started a career at the Post Office but by 1911 he had joined the army and trained as a signal lineman in the Royal Engineers. In 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres, Greengrass volunteered for cable laying on the front line and was shot in the foot. He lay wounded in no-mans land for some days and gangrene set in, leading to the later amputation of his leg.
We are unsure whether this is by him or just a piece of paper perhaps given out at his studio live class - you make your mid up
These sketches are from a portfolio collection bought at local Sussex auction - trimmed mounted and framed they would make stylish and original images for your home or office
