An exquisite and rare piece of Victorian ephemera, this original 1851 love letter is a genuine historical treasure. Posted on February 13th, 1851, just in time for Valentine’s Day, it is addressed to Miss Bristoe of Castleton Hall, Rochdale and includes a charming miniature hand-painted booklet titled “Cupid’s Pocket Book”—a romantic novelty typical of early Victorian sentimentality.

Inside the envelope is a folded letter dated May 25th, 1842, written in sepia ink from a loving grandfather to his young grandson, "Charley". This adds a tender family dimension to the piece, perhaps reused as a keepsake or included to show affection. The letter is full of gentle encouragement and familial affection.

The front of the Valentine features delicate floral decoration, a lace-edge border, and an ornate wax seal. The Penny Red stamp (lettered R-K) and clear postmarks from Bristol and Manchester enhance its philatelic interest.

A beautifully layered item combining postal history, social history, philately, and Victorian romantic customs—ideal for collectors of ephemera, Valentine’s memorabilia, or antique love letters.
