A proper workhorse from an old chemist’s near Barnard Castle, County Durham. This antique cast iron mortar and pestle has the weight and wall thickness you want for serious grinding, with a gently flared rim and a turned foot. It carries an honest industrial patina with a few casting pits and light surface rust from age.

  • Weight: approx. 5.4 kg (very heavy).

  • Pestle: approx. 22 cm long.

  • Mortar mouth: approx. 16.5 cm diameter.

  • Era: late 19th–early 20th century (Victorian/Edwardian).

  • Condition: solid and sound; surface wear, oxidation and casting marks consistent with age and use (see photos).

Use it as a dramatic kitchen mortar for dry herbs/spices, or keep it as apothecary / pharmacy décor for a shop, studio or bar display. If you intend to use with food, give it a thorough clean/season first; it’s been left as found to preserve the character.

A unique, hard-to-find piece of British dispensary history with many years of life left in it.
