A characterful early 20th-century British copper ship’s lantern, fitted with its original deep-blue curved Fresnel lens and retaining its front brass cartouche stamped “TARBOAR” — a rare mis-struck or phonetic variant of Starboard, found only on a handful of hand-finished maritime lanterns from this era.

Standing at approximately 22cm tall, the lantern is constructed in heavy copper with brass fittings and carries a rich, authentic sea-worn patina. The original internal oil burner is still present, complete with reflector dish and a winding wheel crisply stamped SHERWOODS BHAM, indicating manufacture by the respected maker J. & W. Sherwood, Birmingham — known suppliers of quality burners and marine fittings in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The hinged back door opens to reveal the original removable burner, polished concave reflector and intact curved internal blue lens segment. Practical and robust, it exemplifies the functional craftsmanship of early navigation lighting.

A striking decorative piece for coastal interiors, marine collectors, or anyone drawn to genuine nautical heritage.
