A finely observed pair of animal studies attributed to Arthur Wardle (1864–1949), executed in pastel and chalk on brown paper. Wardle was one of Britain’s most respected animal painters of the late 19th and early 20th century, known for his sensitive handling of anatomy and expressive draughtsmanship.
This sheet presents two working studies: a Nubian-style goat, rendered with warm ochre and white highlights, and a complementary chalk study of a turkey beneath. Both are confidently drawn, showing Wardle’s characteristic balance of realism and economy of line. The numbers 274 and 2434 appear in pencil, typical of studio or sketchbook cataloguing marks.
The work is presented in a later mount and wooden frame (overall approx. 60 × 44 cm). A handwritten label on the backing paper notes ‘Arthur Wardle’, consistent with attribution but not itself a formal authentication. A charming and atmospheric study from an artist whose animal work remains widely collected.
