A beautifully balanced matched pair of antique British wooden Indian clubs, each stamped A.W. Gamages Ltd Holborn with the size mark 3 to the finial ends. Made for the London department store’s renowned early 20th-century sports and physical culture department, this pair demonstrates the classic elongated tear-drop form, smooth turned handles and warm, well-handled patina typical of early training clubs.
Indian clubs were widely used in physical culture, fencing and gymnastic training, and Gamages supplied high-quality examples such as these for both home and club use. The size No.3 was a standard training weight at the time – substantial enough for conditioning yet still well-balanced for rhythmic movement and display work. This pair remains wonderfully tactile, with a mellow surface and a pleasing symmetry.
