An unusual and heavy antique cast iron figural bookend, standing approximately 19 cm tall and weighing 1.5 kg.

The piece is cast in deep relief, depicting the classic literary scene of Robinson Crusoe and Friday, showing Crusoe teaching or reading from an open book to Friday beneath tropical palm fronds and jungle foliage. The back is clearly stamped with the historic maker's mark "DIETZ BROTHER & CO."

Founded in New York in 1840 by Robert Edwin Dietz alongside his brother William Henry Dietz (forming Dietz, Brother & Company in 1842), the firm originally started as a small lamp and oil shop before growing into one of America's premier manufacturers of lighting fixtures, metalware, and decorative cast items during the Victorian era. Finished in a dark, patinated bronze-tone metal with substantial heft, this single bookend is designed to anchor heavy volumes securely on a shelf.
