A characterful late Qing Dynasty crackle-glazed vase featuring an applied green dragon in relief, hand-modelled loop handles and a gently tapered meiping-inspired form. Dating to around 1880–1910, this example shows all the hallmarks of provincial southern-kiln production: a thickly potted stoneware body, wide crackle pattern with deep age patination, and glaze pooling around the neck and applied decoration.
The green-glazed dragon, fluid in movement and full of energy, wraps around the body with hand-tooled details still clearly visible. The glaze displays attractive amber-toned craquelure, typical of 19th-century firing and subsequent oxidation over more than a century. The unglazed foot retains a well-defined wheel spiral and authentic firing grit.
A large and striking decorative antique with a wonderful sense of age and presence.
🌿 Late Qing Dynasty (c.1880–1910)
🌿 Crackle-glazed stoneware with natural patination
🌿 Applied green dragon in relief, hand-modelled
🌿 Original loop handles with one showing an old manufacture fissure
🌿 34.5cm tall – an impressive display piece
🌿 Beautiful amber craquelure and glaze pooling consistent with period firing
Condition
The vase is in stable antique condition with expected signs of age. One loop handle shows an old glaze/manufacture crack but not a break. The crackle glaze exhibits age-related staining and oxidation throughout, particularly around the lower body and neck interior. Minor kiln flaws and firing imperfections are consistent with late Qing provincial production. Displays beautifully.
