A finely hand-carved Chinese hardwood figure depicting one of the Eight Immortals (Ba Xian), standing upon a naturalistic rocky base and mounted on a turned hardwood plinth.
The smiling immortal is shown carrying a large pilgrim's hat over his shoulder and holding a small vessel or cup in his hand. The expressive facial carving, flowing robes and deeply carved folds demonstrate the quality of the craftsmanship.
Based on the iconography, this figure most closely resembles Li Tieguai, one of the Eight Immortals in Chinese folklore. However, there is visible historic damage to the top of the head. It appears the figure originally held an additional carved attribute, most likely his characteristic gourd (calabash) or possibly another element extending above the head, which is now missing. This does not detract greatly from the decorative impact of the piece but should be noted for accuracy.
The timber has developed a rich dark patina over many years, with attractive wear highlighting the carved details and edges.
A substantial decorative oriental carving that displays beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition
Good antique condition overall.
There is an old loss to the top of the figure's head, with associated age-related cracking around this area. General surface wear, rubbing to the high points, small knocks and age-related marks are present throughout, consistent with age and use. The green baize covering to the underside of the base is heavily worn.
