A late 19th-century Barnstaple art pottery vase by W.L. Baron, clearly incised to the base: “W L Baron / Barnstaple Ware / 1894” with decorator’s mark. marked 1122 which may be the model number
This is a classic North Devon Arts & Crafts period piece, decorated in sgraffito technique with a stylised bird amongst floral motifs. The yellow slip design is cut through a rich brown ground, creating strong contrast and depth typical of Barnstaple art pottery of the 1890s.
The vase is of cylindrical form with two applied scroll loop handles and stands approximately 17cm tall. The glaze has developed fine age-appropriate crazing, consistent with period production.
William L. Baron worked within the Barnstaple pottery tradition during the late 19th century, and dated examples such as this are increasingly sought after, particularly those retaining clear base inscriptions.
