An impressive antique French ormolu and gilt bronze figural mantel clock, standing approximately 45 cm in height.

The sculptural case features a romantic pastoral scene atop a rocky outcropping, depicting an 18th-century couple in period attire with a basket of flowers and a broad-brimmed hat. The lower architectural base is elaborately cast with Rococo scrolls, acanthus leaves, and a central bas-relief cartouche panel illustrating shepherds with livestock and a country chapel.

The white enamel dial bears black Roman numerals and delicate gilt hands, signed by the retailer "EUG. MARCHAND AINÉ" and "BORDEAUX". The movement is stamped with the maker's mark for S. Marti et Cie (Medaille d'Or).

Note on Mechanics & Structure: The clock is currently running and ticks away healthily, but please note that it lacks its original pendulum and bell. Additionally, the decorative leaf-shaped element on the left-hand side is loose and will require gluing by the buyer upon arrival (left unglued to prevent transit damage). It stands upon its original fabric-lined and carved giltwood presentation base.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 45 cm

  • Weight: Very heavy

Specifications & Details:

  • Item: Figural mantel clock / shelf clock

  • Origin: France (Paris/Bordeaux retailer)

Condition Good antique condition with rich, undisturbed gilt patination and warm character. The original enamel dial is clean, and the cast bronze figures and ornamentation display crisp detail. The movement ticks and runs well, but lacks its pendulum and bell. The left-hand leaf mount is loose and needs to be glued in place by the purchaser (intentionally left unglued to ensure safe transit). Review all high-resolution photographs to inspect the exact condition. There is no glass to the clockface but I really don't think there was ever any as there is no sign of a hinge or where a hinge could have been that I can see
