A fine vintage hip flask by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, dating to the 1930s–1940s. This example features a detachable EPBM (Electro Plated Britannia Metal) cup, amber glass body, and shagreen-style leather covering. The screw cap retains its original cork insert.
The base is stamped with the Dixon trumpet mark, EPBM, and “MADE IN ENGLAND”, the latter being a key dating feature as this designation was only introduced after 1921 for export. Earlier Victorian examples (1880s–1890s) would carry only the “England” stamp or no country mark at all. This confirms the flask as an interwar period piece rather than a late Victorian one.
James Dixon & Sons were one of Sheffield’s most respected makers of silver, pewter, and plated wares, supplying both domestic and sporting markets. This portable flask would have been marketed to gentlemen for travel, shooting, and motoring use.
Condition: good for age, with some wear to the leather covering and expected signs of use to the cap and glass interior. The cup fits well, and the marks are clear.
Dimensions: approx. 11 cm tall (⅛ pint capacity).
A quality piece of interwar British barware that displays beautifully and remains a functional collector’s item.
