An exceptional antique brass carriage clock retailing via Mappin & Webb Ltd, London W, complete with its original silk- and velvet-lined leather travel case.
Standing approximately 12 cm tall and possessing a reassuring weight of over 750 grams (nearly three quarters of a kilo), this timepiece represents the high-quality brass and bevelled glass construction characteristic of fine carriage clocks. The white enamel dial features black Roman numerals and is signed "MAPPIN & WEBB Ltd, LONDON W". Opening the rear glass door reveals the quality French brass movement (stamped "FRANCE" on the backplate), which winds smoothly and remains in good working order, keeping time and running reliably.
The clock bears inventory or serial numbering "140" stamped into the brass frame, alongside fine hand-scratched watchmaker service inscriptions on the base—including notation dated 25th July 1969 ("25/7/69") and a subsequent service entry from 8th September 1981 ("8/9/81")—testifying to its history of professional maintenance.
Maker History: Founded in Sheffield in 1775, Mappin & Webb grew to become one of Britain's most prestigious luxury silversmiths and fine retailers, holding royal warrants and establishing flagship London showrooms on Regent Street and Oxford Street (London W). Condition
Good antique working condition. The movement winds well and runs reliably. Cosmetically, the brass case retains its original uncleaned patina. The dial glass features a crack across the front face (as detailed in high-resolution photographs), while the remaining bevelled glass panels are intact. The original leather-covered travel case shows appropriate age-related wear to the exterior while retaining its protective lined interior. Review all high-resolution photographs to inspect the condition.
