Elegant antique red chinoiserie mantel clock with hand-painted lacquer decoration and French brass movement, c.1900. Chimes soundly on the hour and half-hour; runs briefly but needs a service to keep time. A decorative and characterful statement piece for a period home or collector.

A beautiful late Victorian to early Edwardian red chinoiserie mantel clock with a fine French brass movement and richly decorated lacquered case, dating from around 1890–1910.

The movement, stamped FRANCE with serial number 2279, is typical of quality French makers such as Japy Frères and was produced for the British export market. It features an eight-day mechanism with a coiled gong that strikes the hours and half-hours with a clear, pleasant chime.

The wooden case is finished in deep red lacquer with intricate gilt and polychrome decoration — floral sprays, pagoda-style buildings, and scrolling detail — all hand-painted in the chinoiserie style. It has a domed top, gilt bezel with convex glass, and a brass sound plate to the rear.

Condition:
The clock chimes well on the hour and half-hour when prompted. The movement runs briefly for a few seconds but then stops. It is not overwound and appears complete, so it likely requires a service or adjustment to bring it fully back into running order. The case retains its original lacquer with wear and marks appropriate for age.

Dimensions (approx):
Width 29 cm x Height 17 cm x Depth 13 cm

A charming decorative clock that combines fine French clockmaking with the distinctive artistry of English chinoiserie. Ideal as a feature piece for a mantel, sideboard, or period interior.

Date: circa 1890–1910
Origin: France (movement) / England (case)
