A characterful late 19th-century Scottish landscape painting on tin, depicting a dramatic valley opening toward a calm sea loch, with rugged cliffs rising on either side and soft northern light illuminating the distance. The work carries the quiet, atmospheric tonality associated with Victorian Scottish School painters, capturing the wild remoteness of the Highlands and Islands with finely observed natural detail.

The painting is monogrammed “JH” to the lower area and is accompanied by a handwritten pencil inscription on the verso, reading “Loch [Levies?], [Arbost?] Skye” in period cursive. The exact loch name is now indistinct, but the wording strongly suggests an intended association with the Isle of Skye. The geological forms, palette and sense of a west coast sea inlet further support this attribution.

Presented in its original Victorian gilt gesso frame, richly decorated and attractively aged, the painting has a poetic and contemplative presence. A beautiful piece for collectors of Scottish landscapes, antique Highland art, or Skye-related works.
