An antique brass field microscope by Stanley, London, dating to the early 20th century and designed as a compact, portable optical instrument for surveyors, naturalists and engineers working in the field.
Made in solid brass with knurled focusing rings and a pull-tube extension, this cylindrical microscope retains its original lenses and the clear STANLEY, LONDON maker’s stamp to the inner tube.
These early pocket microscopes were produced for practical close-up inspection in situations where full laboratory equipment was impractical.
The instrument extends to approximately 14.5cm when opened, with both upper and lower lenses intact and a pleasing, untouched patina to the brass throughout.
A characterful and functional piece of British scientific history and a desirable collectible for those interested in antique optics.
