The Dallmeyer Snapshot is a cross-swinging strut design, made for Dallmeyer by Houghton-Butcher but fitted with a Dallmeyer lens. It is of quite simple construction, with the front and rear sections being of simple pressed steel. The surface finish is somewhat similar to the Japan crystal finish on Kodak VP cameras and whilst it has some visible ware is in reasonable condition for nearly 100 years old
Born on September 6, 1830, in Loxten (Westphalia, Germany), John Henry Dallmeyer was the son of a wealthy landowner, William Dallmeyer, and his wife Catherine.
In mid-1851, J. H. Dallmeyer went to London, where he soon became an employee of the optician W. Hewitt's workshop. Shortly after, he joined Andrew Ross's studio. Manufacturer of objectives and telescopes.
In 1860, J. H. Dallmeyer founded the company bearing his name. It is mainly dedicated to the manufacture of high-quality lenses, but also sells cameras supplied by various manufacturers on which it grafts its lenses and puts its mark.
