A substantial Edwardian solid silver sugar bowl by Sebastian Henry Garrard of R & S Garrard & Co, fully hallmarked for London, 1909.

Weighing 316 grams of sterling silver, the bowl has an impressive presence without being overly ornate. Twin scroll handles rise elegantly from either side, while applied strapwork decoration, a raised circular foot and its warm gilt interior give the piece a distinctive late-Edwardian character with an Art Nouveau influence.

The interior retains its gilding, originally intended to protect the silver from staining during use. The underside carries a complete set of London hallmarks, including the maker’s mark SG, lion passant, leopard’s head and the date letter “o” for 1909.

It is also marked with the reference L227, the wording “3 PIECES” and a separate “B” workshop stamp. The “3 PIECES” marking indicates that the bowl was originally produced as part of a larger silver service.

Condition

Very good antique condition.

There is light surface scratching and age-related wear consistent with a silver bowl dating from 1909. A small localised dint is present on the upper body, together with some wear and marking to the gilt interior. The hallmarks remain clearly legible.

Please examine all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description.
