Corgi Toys is the brand name of a range of die-cast toy vehicles created by Mettoy and currently owned by Hornby.
Whizzwheels was Corgi's equivalent of Matchbox's Superfast, launched in 1970 when Husky were rebranded as Corgi Juniors. The name was also used for larger models, competing with Matchbox Speed / Super Kings. Both companies launched these faster wheels, on thinner axles, to compete better with Hot Wheels.
During the 1970s, model car manufacturers were constantly coming up with new gimmicks for their diecast vehicles. Matchbox introduced Rola-matics, which had parts that moved as the model was rolled along. Hot Wheels had Revvers, which were powered by rubber bands. And Corgis Junior range gave us Growlers, which made engine sounds as they were pushed along!
The Mettoy ("Metal Toy") company was founded in 1933 by German migr Philip Ullmann in Northampton, England, where he was later joined by South African-born German Arthur Katz, who had previously worked for Ullmann at his toy company Tipp and Co of Nuremberg.
