A quirky kitsch mid-century Italian ceramic mantel clock featuring a rearing horse, hand-painted in glossy brown and cream glazes with green foliage detailing.
Made in Italy circa 1955–1965, this sculptural ceramic case is fitted with a Mercedes (West Germany) mechanical 30-hour wind-up movement accessed from the back. The clock ticks and runs but stops after a short time, suggesting it simply needs a light service or oil to run continuously.
The piece captures the lively Capodimonte-inspired style of postwar Italian ceramics, combining expressive modelling with fine glaze work. The collaboration of Italian artistry and German engineering makes this an attractive and collectable mid-century design object.
