A striking mid-century slip-trailed earthenware bowl, attributed to Poole Pottery and dated 1950. The piece features a bold slip-trailed floral motif in raised honey and ochre slip over a deep chocolate-brown glaze, a style strongly associated with Poole’s Traditional Ware and the influence of designer Truda Carter in the 1940s–50s.
The hand-cut oval reserve on the underside, the slip-trailed decoration, buff earthenware body and the distinctive decorator’s cypher are all consistent with Poole Pottery’s mid-century production. The decoration is confidently applied, with characteristic “ropey” slip lines and fluid naturalistic brushwork. Measuring approximately 28cm in diameter, this bowl makes an eye-catching display piece and a fine example of post-war British studio pottery.
Decorator’s Mark
The base bears a hand-incised decorator’s cypher arranged within an oval reserve, together with the date 1950. Poole Pottery decorators frequently used personal cyphers rather than literal initials, and often combined letters or symbols in stacked formats. The style, placement and execution of this mark are consistent with Poole Pottery’s mid-century marking practices, supporting the attribution.
