Original Watercolour Landscape by C. Pyne – Framed English Countryside Scene

An original signed watercolour landscape by C. Pyne, an English landscape painter believed to have been active during the late Victorian and early 20th century. Although relatively little is documented about the artist, works bearing the C. Pyne signature continue to appear through British auction houses and specialist dealers, where they are appreciated for their traditional depictions of the British countryside and their decorative appeal.

This example depicts a sweeping rural valley with mature woodland, scattered cottages and rolling hills beyond, executed in soft muted tones with confident watercolour washes that capture the atmosphere of the English countryside. The composition is signed 'C. Pyne' in the lower left corner.

The painting is presented in a period stained wooden frame with a gilt slip. The reverse retains much of its original construction, including the timber backing, original paper covering, hanging rings and period fixings, all of which support the age and originality of the piece.

Condition

Good overall condition for its age.

There is light foxing and age-related toning to the paper together with some minor rippling. The frame displays the expected wear, marks and small knocks associated with age and use. The reverse shows losses to the original backing paper, as shown in the photographs.
