A matched pair of Chinese porcelain book-form plaques, modelled as solid slab “books” rather than hollow vessels, and hand painted with traditional scholar scenes set within landscape settings of rocks, trees and garden terraces.

Each plaque is formed as a rectangular porcelain block with a flat top and base, decorated to the front only. The paintings show scholars engaged in study and conversation, accompanied by vertical calligraphic inscriptions, executed in soft enamel colours with fine black line work.
These were intended as decorative scholar’s desk objects, often used as bookends, display plaques, or cabinet pieces, and work particularly well flanking books or as a symmetrical pair on shelving.
