A well-formed Royal Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase from the interwar period, produced in the 1920s–30s and decorated in the sought-after Sung-style drip glaze. This example is made in shape 4625, a rounded form with stepped collar neck, used by the Lambeth factory for a number of their experimental glaze series.
The glaze decoration corresponds to pattern X8863, part of Doulton’s Sung-inspired output, created to emulate the layered, running effects found in Chinese Song ceramics. The vase shows strong colours—blue, mulberry, ochre and green—applied in overlapping flows that create a lively, unpredictable surface typical of this short-lived decorative line.
The impressed initials CC identify the decorator as Cissie Camplin, a long-serving Lambeth artist active at the factory between 1901 and 1939. Camplin is known for her work on drip, Sung and flambé-style finishes, and pieces bearing her initials are increasingly collected.
The underside carries the correct Royal Doulton lion-and-crown mark, together with X8863, 4625 and the CC decorator’s stamp. A genuine period piece showing the technical confidence of Lambeth’s stoneware department at a time when glaze experimentation was at its peak.
