The Senufo are renowned for their sculptural traditions, many associated with Poro society rituals. Figures of the Ancient Mother symbolise the spiritual mother of the initiates and the wider community. Such carvings are used in teaching, processions, and ceremonies, serving to connect initiates with ancestral spirits.
This figure shows a stylised human form with elongated proportions and a serene facial expression. It has visible splits in the wood, consistent with age and use, but retains great presence and tactile quality.
