Tilgmans Keramik art Vase -Swedish ceramics model 505 signed to base 28cm tall
Tilgmans Keramik was a pottery just outside of Gothenburg. It operated from 1948-1975. In its heyday, it employed about 80 people. The potterywas started by Paul Harald Tilgmann (1904-1974).
The pottery was very popular in the 1950s when it was managed by its artistic director, Marian Zawadzki (1912-1978). Zawadzki was a Polish refugee and started work at Tilgmans in 1953. He developed a technique using a sophisticated sgrafitto decoration. This involved carving fine lines into the dark textured background. The designs were then hand-painted with coloured overglazes. Common themes featured birds, fish, flowers and butterflies.
The Pottery closed after Tilgmann's death in 1974.
