Eric Morecambe collection 7
This is a collection of original family photographs taken by Eric and his family (some may be press photos etc) that belonged to the family and were recently auctioned off by Hansons Auctioneers on 10th and 11th January 2025 where Eric’s signature glasses and pipe sold for a whopping £20,000 plus auction fees showing that the love for this enormous star lives on
When they’ve gone, they’ve gone – We have just 25 sets of these photographs – no more copies – a one off chance to own some genuine comedy memorabilia and your own slice of history as Charles Hanson said ‘Go on, make a memory’!
It was a large sale over two days auctioning off most of the contents of Erics family home. The sale was titled ‘The Eric Morecambe Collection’ and these photos came from this sale - All of these particular photos were taken from Erics private study in his home in Harpenden
This is a small collection (collection No. 7 of 25) of personal images of Eric, his wife Joan and his children Gail, Gary and Steven (whom they adopted in 1974) and their close family going about their daily life -including holidays, weddings, Erics parents, Eric playing golf and fishing etc.
They are mostly one offs having come from their personal collection of family photos in Erics study where he sat at his desk and wrote all those memorable comedic sketches
Joan Bartlett Morecambe OBE sadly died on her 97th birthday on 26 March last year.
Some photos have annotations on the reverse by the hand of Eric or someone within his family, Some have coloured stickers we assume to mark which photos were used in a publication over the years and there are also official stamps from various media organisations spanning decades.
John Eric Bartholomew (14 May 1926 – 28 May 1984), known by his stage name Eric Morecambe, was an English comedian who together with Ernie Wise formed the double act Morecambe and Wise. The partnership lasted from 1941 until Morecambe's death in 1984. Morecambe took his stage name from his home town, the Seaside resort of Morecambe in Lancashire.
He was the co-star of the BBC1's television series The Morecambe & Wise Show, which for the 1977 Christmas episode gained UK viewing figures of over 28 million people. One of the most prominent comedians in British popular culture, in 2002 he was named one of the 100 Great Britons in a BBC poll.
I would finally like to say to the family and fans of this great man that I was truly humbled to have had access to all these photos. It is not often in my work that you have the opportunity to really see behind the scenes as it were - there are a lot very intermate images and I have spent a long time going through them all to come up with these 25 small packages each of which I think show a small window into the life of one of Great Britain's favourite entertainers.
PLEASE NOTE - The Auction Brochure shown in the images is NOT part of this sale
