A beautifully made Victorian walnut and parquetry inlaid sewing and writing box, dated 1876 and engraved with the initials E.L. on a mother-of-pearl hexagonal cartouche.
The richly figured walnut veneer is decorated with geometric parquetry and cross-banded stringing in exotic woods, showing the fine craftsmanship of late-19th-century English box-making.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a fitted interior with lift-out tray, lined in ivory silk and blue velvet with beaded details. Beneath the tray lies a folding writing slope with dark blue leather panels decorated in gilt. A printed classical figure decorates the base compartment, and the box retains its original brass hinges and lock.
Although the parquetry work shows influence from the Tunbridge Ware tradition, this piece is more accurately described as an English Victorian walnut sewing and writing box in the Tunbridge style.
