Vintage Art Deco Paste Convertible Double Dress Clip Brooch

A wonderfully versatile vintage Art Deco double dress clip brooch, set throughout with clear glass paste stones in an elaborate geometric openwork design.

When assembled on its removable pin-back frame, the two mirrored sections form one substantial statement brooch measuring nearly 7cm across. By pressing the retaining studs and sliding the sections from the frame, they separate into two individual dress clips that can be worn on opposite sides of a neckline, on lapels or as decorative shoe or handbag clips.

The ingenious convertible construction is characteristic of jewellery fashionable during the 1930s and 1940s. Although commonly described as a “Duette” brooch, no maker’s name or precious-metal mark could be found on this example.

An attractive piece of period costume jewellery with considerable decorative impact and an interesting mechanical design.

CONDITION

In fair vintage condition with surface wear, scratches, tarnishing and discolouration consistent with age and previous use.

A number of the smaller paste stones are missing, darkened or affected by deterioration to their reflective backing. Some remaining stones show age-related cloudiness and reduced sparkle. This is clearly visible in the close-up photographs and has been reflected in the price.

The two dress clips detach and reattach to the central brooch frame correctly. The hinged clips, retaining mechanism and brooch pin are present and functioning at the time of listing.

The metal is unmarked and has not been tested, so no claim is made that it is silver. The vintage presentation box has marks and wear and is included for display and protection.
