A charming example of mid-20th-century Scandinavian folk art, hand-carved in pale hardwood and depicting a small mouse perched atop a toadstool. The carving has lovely movement and whimsy: the mouse is shown nibbling with both paws raised, its tail curling gently around the mushroom cap, and the stem carved with a natural sweeping taper typical of Danish and Swedish folk traditions of the period.
These pieces were often created by independent woodcarvers working in rural workshops, favouring birch, alder or beech for their fine grain and warm tone.
This example shows all the right traits of Scandinavian studio carving from the 1950s–70s: stylised yet expressive features, smooth tactile finishing, and evidence of hand-tool work throughout. A delightful decorative figure for woodland-themed interiors, Scandinavian collectors, or lovers of natural folk art.
