A handsome antique wooden chess set dating from around 1900 to 1930, complete with its original sliding-lid wooden box. The turned pieces are beautifully shaped in the classic early Staunton style, handmade from natural boxwood and ebonised wood with rich aged patina.
Each chessman shows lovely turning detail, with hand-carved knights and elegant domed kings and queens. The king stands approximately 7 cm tall. One black pawn has an old chip to the collar, otherwise the set is complete and ready for play or display.
The box is pine with a simple nailed construction typical of Edwardian and early 20th-century sets. Ideal for collectors of antique games, or as a distinctive decorative piece for a study or games room.
