Working Aesthetic silver clock and thermometer in Mandolin form
Working Aesthetic silver clock and thermometer in Mandolin form
Working Aesthetic silver clock and thermometer in Mandolin form 29cm long
This piece dates from the late 19th century and is in full working order. The workmanship in this is phenomenal, a proper, proper lovely antique. The blue velvet backing for me lifts this piece- a real corker
The clock face depicts a gold cherub being pulled along on a mono wheel by two dragon flies. Brass drum case with two small feet and ring at top. Built-in winding key on back with hand-set button in centre of key. Regulation lever on base. 'Gnat' 30hr timepiece movement. Open spring. Pin pallet escapemen
As I write this and look at this lovely piece it ticks away and just that sound transports you back over 100 years - when things were somewhat slower and well -quite different to today that' s for sure.
By the British United Clock Company Ltd in Birmingham this is a wonderful example of naturalistic and aesthetic silver.
The Aesthetic movement was a late 19th century ideal that art should be created for art’s sake and designed for purely visual pleasure. In silver there have to be practical considerations too as the objects are functional, but the decoration tends to have a free will and beauty with often contradicting themes. There tends to be a cross-over with other art forms too, especially Japonisme and Naturalism.
Naturalistically inspired silver has been evident since the 18th century with the main theme of decoration inspired by nature, be it flora or fauna.
The British United Clock Company was formed in 1885 by Edward Davies, (formerly Superindendant of works for Ansonia in the USA). He set up a factory in Birmingham, England. The company closed in 1909.
